Do you notice a growing amount of splotchy brown and/or red discolorations on your face, chest, and hands? Have you seen broken capillaries or spider veins surface on your legs or face? Do you experience the flushing and constant redness of rosacea?
Are you wondering how to reduce blotchy or brown patches of melasma and sun damage? Have you tried chemical peels and seen some improvement, but not enough to fully address your condition?
You may be a great candidate for Phototherapy BBL™ (broadband light) if you suffer from any of these conditions and the issue is widespread. If your issues are confined to just a few unsightly brown spots or vein spots, you may be a candidate for targeted spot treatment with VariLite™ laser therapy. In either case, treatment is quick with minimal discomfort, and no downtime.
Your desired results may be achieved in a single treatment for a few pinpoint red or brown spots. For more pervasive discoloration, a treatment series is likely required. Series treatments yield both instant results and continued improvement over 3-6 months.

Phototherapy BBL™ for Skin Discolorations
Phototherapy BBL™ can bring renewed clarity and consistent color and tone to your skin, while also improving texture. BBL™ energy enables safe and precise treatment of age and sun spots, melasma, small facial or leg veins, rosacea and many other skin conditions.
With all BBL™ procedures, any area of the body can be safely and effectively treated. Areas most commonly treated with Phototherapy BBL™ are highly sun-exposed areas: face, neck, shoulders, chest, backs of hands and legs.
There’s one critical thing to remember in preparing for BBL procedures—avoid active sun tanning or self-tanning lotions for 2-4 weeks prior to treatment. See more helpful preparation tips of things to consider before treatment.
What Happens During My Photofacial?
You can expect any intense pulse light laser treatment such as BBL™ to have mild discomfort at most. For more information about what exactly happens during your Photofacial session for your face, hands or chest, visit our Laser FAQs.
What Happens After Phototherapy BBL™?
You may experience some temporary redness or slight swelling for a couple of hours after bbl treatment. Avoid harmful direct sun exposure for several weeks post-treatment. Be especially vigilant about protecting your skin within the first 7-10 days after your procedure, as your pigmented spots darken and flake off like coffee grounds.
When Do I See Results?
Results of Phototherapy BBL™ vary, as with all aesthetic procedures. Within the first 2 weeks, you should see improvements in discoloration. Gradually, over 3-6 months, your treated skin feels smoother, and fine lines and pores are less noticeable. Sun spots, melasma, veins, rosacea and other uneven pigmentation notably fade.
Generally, we recommend patients receive 2-5 treatments at 2-4 week intervals. This achieves best results for most patients–clear, firm skin with even skin tone, texture and color. The number of necessary treatments varies based on skin type, desired level of improvement, and the existing condition of your skin.

Varilite™ for Spot Treatment of Veins
Vascular lesions are comprised of blood vessels of various diameters, lengths, and shapes, many of which lie near the skin’s surface. The coloring of these lesions can vary from shades of red or blue, purple, or brown. The unwanted appearance of facial veins very near the skin’s surface most commonly occurs on the sides of your nose, cheeks, chin, or in front of your ears.
Dr. Macdonald may opt to use the VariLite™ laser for your treatment if your discoloration is limited to just a few distinct age or vein spots. The VariLite™ laser emits an intense beam of laser energy that is selectively absorbed by the color in these vessels or abnormally pigmented lesions so that there is virtually no adjacent tissue damage. Satisfying results are seen immediately.
