Not Sure What to Do About Your Double Chin? KYBELLA® Could Be Your Solution

Double Chin, KYBELLA, Aesthetic Surgery Center

Are you tired of looking at your double chin? You’re in good company. A recent survey commissioned on behalf of pharmaceutical company Allergan found about half of men and women surveyed were unhappy with their double chins and the effect under-chin fat has on their overall facial appearance and self-confidence. And in its annual survey, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) found more people are becoming aware of their double chins — and seeking ways to correct them — thanks to “selfies” that provide a new, up-close angle of those unflattering fat deposits.

Until recently, getting rid of a double chin and creating a slimmer facial profile meant having surgery — either a lower facelift or liposuction. But today, KYBELLA® injections provide a minimally-invasive approach to getting rid of under-chin fat (also called submental fat). KYBELLA uses a special solution to break down fat so it can be removed by your body’s natural waste disposal system over a period of weeks. Here’s how it works and what to expect during and after treatment at the Aesthetic Surgery Center.

KYBELLA injections: How they work

KYBELLA uses a primary active ingredient called deoxycholic acid, a synthetic version of a natural substance that’s produced by your liver. The deoxycholic acid produced by your body helps break down the fats in the foods you eat so they can be processed (and eventually eliminated) by your body.

The researchers who developed KYBELLA decided to capture that fat-dissolving power by creating a pure synthetic version of the acid. When KYBELLA is injected directly into the stubborn fatty deposits under your chin, it begins breaking down the fat cell walls, dissolving fat and liquefying it so your body can carry away the resulting debris.

KYBELLA treatment and results

KYBELLA treatment is performed right in the office and there’s no downtime, so you can get back to your regular activities after your session is over. Before your treatment begins, Dr. McDonald will evaluate your chin area and mark the area to show just where to make the injections. By “mapping out” where the injections will be located, Dr. McDonald helps ensure you get the smooth, consistent results you’re looking for.

Next, he’ll numb your chin area with a topical cream to minimize any discomfort the injections might cause. KYBELLA injections use a fine needle, so any discomfort you do feel should be minimal.

Once your chin is numb and the injections sites are mapped out on your skin, Dr. McDonald will begin injecting the KYBELLA solution throughout your submental region. Most men and women need a minimum of 15 injections to ensure the solution is evenly dispersed, but the number you’ll need will depend on several factors, including how much under-chin fat you have and what results you’re looking for. Most treatments take about a half hour or less. Depending on the amount of fat you want to have removed, you may need two to four treatments spaced out over several weeks.

After treatment, it’s common to have mild redness and swelling around the injection sites, just as you would have with other types of injections. You may also experience some bruising and some temporary numbness. If you like, you can gently apply ice to the treatment area or take an over-the-counter pain reliever for discomfort. A compression wrap for your neck may also help decrease swelling, but ask Dr. McDonald before using one.

Typically, it takes the body four to eight weeks to carry away the fatty debris, and you should expect to see your initial results around that time. You and Dr. McDonald also can determine at that time if you’ll need additional treatments to reach your goals.
