How Is Rhinoplasty Different for Men and Women?

Over 200,000 Americans underwent rhinoplasty in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Given that your nose is arguably the most defining aspect of your face due to its central location and prominence, this isn’t surprising. If you’d like to improve your appearance with an updated nose that you feel better suits your face, contact Aesthetic Surgery Center to book an appointment.

Rhinoplasty popularity

Rhinoplasty is one of the top cosmetic procedures that both men and women readily choose. While there was a time when women primarily elected to have such procedures, a report published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal in 2016 showed that rhinoplasty appeared in the male service section of 39 percent of cosmetic surgery websites.

Rhinoplasty gender differences

The rhinoplasty procedure itself is the same for all genders, and anyone benefits from a nose that suits their face. The desired goals, however, often vary.

Many men prefer what’s considered to be a more masculine nose, which usually requires a straighter dorsal line. Many women prefer a very subtly curved dorsal line, which appears more traditionally feminine.

The angle of the lower nose that helps form the upper lip tends to be a touch smaller for men compared with women. This usually involves an approximately 90-degree angle for men and closer to a 100- to 110-degree angle for women.

Good candidates for rhinoplasty

No matter your gender, you may be a strong candidate for rhinoplasty if you dislike the shape or overall appearance of your nose. Common reasons people desire rhinoplasty include a nose with:

Some transgender individuals appreciate having a nose that feels more aligned with their gender identity. Rhinoplasty can also help if you’ve endured trauma or injury to your nose or have difficulty breathing properly because of its specifics.

What rhinoplasty recovery is like

Right after your procedure, you may need to have surgical tape and a splint in place to allow for proper healing. You likely need to wear that for about a week. Some amount of bruising and swelling for up to two weeks is normal. Generally speaking, people tolerate any mild to moderate discomfort during this period well.

You’ll need to be careful not to bump your nose, and you won’t be able to wear glasses of any kind for 6-8 weeks. To prevent any pressure to your nose while it heals, avoid harsh cleansing techniques. You may also need to avoid makeup over the surgical site until you receive the doctor’s go-ahead. Heavy exercise may be limited as well.
