Also called rhytidectomy, a facelift is designed to correct issues in the lower third of the face – specifically, the cheeks, jawline, jowls and some issues in the neck. Facelift surgery also helps elevate the cheek areas to eliminate sagging and restore lost volume while helping to redefine the jawline. During the procedure, incisions are made behind the hairline and around the ears to access the muscles and other underlying tissues in these areas of the face, gently repositioning them and eliminating excess skin and other tissue to erase lines and wrinkles and create a firmer and smoother appearance. Liposuction can also be used when needed to remove fatty deposits so the face appears slimmer and drooping is eliminated. Facelifts usually are performed in a hospital setting using general anesthesia, and most procedures take about four hours.
A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to address deep horizontal folds, saggy tissue and vertical banding in the neck. Also called a lower rhytidectomy, a neck lift can restore a more youthful appearance throughout the lower face, including the jowls. During the procedure, an incision is made around each ear to access the muscles and other underlying tissues. In patients with significant submental (under the chin) fat, a small incision will be made under the chin and the fat will be removed using liposuction. The underlying muscles are repositioned and secured with sutures to create a firmer profile and excess skin and other tissue are removed. Finally, the incisions are closed and a dressing is applied. Most neck lift procedures take about two hours to complete.
Yes, many patients opt to have both procedures performed to treat loose, sagging skin and eliminate lines and wrinkles so a more youthful profile is created. Combined, face and neck lift surgery takes about four to five hours, and the procedures may also be combined with a forehead lift or eyelid surgery to address issues in the upper face as well.
