Dr. Michael Macdonald’s Patient Care Philosophy

Dr. Macdonald specializes in treating men and women who wish to improve their appearance. Throughout all phases of treatment including surgery, recovery, and follow-up, Dr. Macdonald and his highly trained staff at Aesthetic Surgery Center provide close, personal attention to each and every patient in order to help them achieve their unique desired look. He emphasizes an individually tailored approach in evaluating and treating his patients to produce the most natural-looking results possible with minimal recovery time.

Dr. Macdonald provides the highest quality of medical care to his patients by attending to each patient’s concerns in the following manner:

Understanding Each Patient’s Specific Goals

The doctor-patient interaction begins with a detailed consultation. Dr. Macdonald’s caring and sensitive style and his calm and patient demeanor sets the patient at ease right away. He takes the time to discuss and understand each patient’s unique personal needs, concerns, goals and expectations.

Enabling Each Patient to Make the Best Decision

Dr. Macdonald is meticulous in assessing various options available to each patient, with a view to identifying which procedure(s) is best suited for the individual based upon their unique goals and expectations. He makes the effort to educate his patients as to what procedures are available to achieve their goals, the outcomes that are realistically possible given their specific goals and constraints. He interacts with each patient in a caring, candid, humble and respectful manner. Though the nature of the cosmetic field is inherently one of appearance and image, Dr. Macdonald’s approach is not flashy, pushy or arrogant. He truly does strive to serve each unique patient in the best manner possible and will take the time to educate you and enable you to feel confident in your choice of treatment.

Planning for Surgery

In assessing optimal care, each patient’s aesthetic goals and expectations are balanced with other life considerations such as exercise, diet and personal time constraints. The planning process is thoroughly discussed with each patient in an effort to facilitate an informed and comprehensive decision-making process. Dr. Macdonald is very candid and informative about what to expect immediately post surgery and throughout the healing process so that you can appropriately plan any necessary adjustments to your lifestyle during that time.

Surgical Technique

As a double board-certified surgeon (in both Facial Plastic & Reconstructive surgery, as well as Head & Neck surgery), patient safety is always paramount to Dr. Macdonald. He takes great care, where possible, to minimize all related risks in pursuing desired treatment.  Dr. Macdonald strongly abides by his physicians’ Hippocratic Oath to “do no harm”.  He believes in following a safe, conservative approach to surgery, avoiding risky or overly aggressive maneuvers, and following a rigorous protocol before, during and after surgery to maximize patient safety and optimize results.

Anesthesia

You can rely on Dr. Macdonald’s conservative medical judgment as sound and safe.  One of the ways he minimizes patient risk is by opting to use “twilight sleep” intravenous (IV) sedation v. general anesthesia whenever possible.  The benefits to the patient are:
  1. Decreased overall health risk of surgery by eliminating the risks associated with general anesthesia
  2. Quicker recovery following surgery due to elimination of general anesthesia after-effects such as upset stomach and excessive fatigue
  3. Reduced overall surgery cost to the patient

Patient preference regarding anesthesia is of course taken into consideration. General anesthesia is also available when requested, or when indicated by a pre-existing medical condition.

Surgical Follow-up

Whether you have had a skincare treatment, minor office procedure, or full facelift surgery, Dr. Macdonald or one of his kind and caring staff will follow up with you by telephone within 24 hours to ensure that you have had a favorable outcome and are healing properly.  Dr. Macdonald takes the time to patiently address all questions and concerns from patients and their post-surgery “caregivers” particularly during those first few days of healing when anxieties may arise. Though cosmetic procedures are elective, these services remain within the realm of medical treatment.  As such, Dr. Macdonald takes his role as physician seriously and believes that each patient deserves a humanistic approach needed to foster a solid, trusting doctor-patient relationship.
