Chin Augmentation Surgery in the San Francisco Bay Area

Mentoplasty by Dr. Michael R. Macdonald

A chin implant or bone-reshaping adds strength and definition to the jawline.  The implant used is often tapered at the sides so that improvement in the “prejowel” area (adjacent to the chin) and neck are commonly seen in addition to improvement in the contour of the chin itself.  This is very important in achieving facial harmony in symmetry and proportion.  Chin augmentation is often particularly effective when done in conjunction with other procedures (i.e. neck liposuction, rhinoplasty or facelift).  Chin implants have an excellent record for safety and high patient satisfaction.

Procedure Information

Dr. Macdonald most commonly performs chin implant surgery under monitored Intravenous (IV) Sedation, also referred to as “Twilight Sleep Anesthesia”, along with local anesthetic at a private surgery center in San Francisco.  The patient benefits of this method versus general anesthesia are further described in the section entitled Patient Care Philosophy. The patient experiences no pain during the surgery and remembers very little from the time the IV is started.  Chin implant surgery usually takes from 1-1.5 hours.

A small incision is placed inside the mouth or just under the chin area.  Dr. Macdonald selects the proper size and shape of the implant from those he and the patient jointly considered the most likely choices during the preoperative planning consultation. At the time of surgery, Dr. Macdonald places one of the selected implant into a pocket over the jawbone.  The implant is secured precisely in position.

Recovery Information

The chin is taped after surgery to minimize bruising and swelling.  About 80% of the swelling with have subsided within the first 8 days.  You’ll need to keep the tape in place at least 5 days and avoid getting it wet as this is important in solidifying the proper positioning of the implant.  If an intra-oral incision is made, the sutures will dissolve; otherwise, they will be removed in 5-7 days.

While your post-operative discomfort should be minimal, you may have some trouble chewing and should eat soft foods for 5-7 days.  You should be able to return to work and normal activities in 1 week.  You should avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks and swimming for 4 weeks.  After several weeks, you won’t be able to feel the implant at all because it assumes the consistency and feel of your own tissue.
