Loss of fullness in the cheek/midface area may give a flattened or sunken look to the face. This may occur following an injury or simply as the midface loses bone and soft tissue volume resulting from normal aging. Alternatively, loss of proportion here may also be due to excessive fullness in the soft tissue of the lower midface and cheeks. Reestablishing proportion in this area of the face can create more natural-looking, more youthful-looking and more balanced facial features. Subtle changes created with care, artistry and finesse can have a wonderfully positive impact.

Procedure Information
Described briefly below, there are at least three options to patients seeking some level of cheek recontouring to improve the overall look and balance of their face.
Cheek recontouring may be achieved through a midface/cheek lift (also called a “48-Hour Facelift”) to readjust the position of your own natural tissue. The soft tissue of the midface, which has gradually fallen and flattened over time, is resuspended to its more youthful position so that the cheeks are more defined and deep, pronounced nasolabial folds (between the bottom of the nose and the corners of the mouth) are softened or eliminated. The small incisions used are made above the hairline and occasionally inside the mouth so that there are no visible scars from this procedure.
Cheek recontouring may also be achieved through cheek implant surgery, in which silastic or Gortex® implants are placed next to your natural cheekbones. These implants are placed through incisions inside the mouth. The implant size varies, and often the final decision is made at the time of surgery taking into account the patient’s desires and how the implant looks once inserted in position.
If more appropriate for the patient, a temporary improvement in cheek recontouring can be achieved through an injectable tissue filler(such as Radiesse®, JUVEDERM®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, or fat). This non-surgical approach with little to no risk and recovery time may be all that is required depending on the patient’s specific needs and desired outcome.
In considering possibilities for cheek recontouring improvement, the patient will benefit from an initial consultation with Dr. Macdonald or Dr. Macdonald will thoroughly review the options with the patient to arrive at the best decision based on his/her unique needs and goals.
