Brow Lift Surgery in the San Francisco Bay Area

Endoscopic Forehead Lift Technique by Dr. Michael R. Macdonald

The brow and forehead areas often show the first signs of aging as the skin begins to lose its elasticity.  Sun, wind, habitual facial expressions and the pull of gravity produce frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows.  Even people in their 30s may look older than their years because the forehead and brow areas appear tired, angry, or have a sad expression which does not reflect how they actually feel.

By addressing the upper portion of the face, the brow lift provides subtle but effective facial rejuvenation.  It may be considered along with a traditional facelift, or the more conservative mid-face/cheek lift (aka “48-hour facelift”), and eyelid surgery for a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.

Procedure Information

Dr. Macdonald most commonly performs brow lifts under monitored Intravenous (IV) Sedation, also referred to as “Twilight Sleep Anesthesia”, at a private surgery center in San Francisco. The patient benefits of this method versus general anesthesia are further described in the section entitled Patient Care Philosophy. The patient experiences no pain during the surgery and remembers very little from the time the IV is started. Brow lift surgery usually takes 1-2 hours.

The most progressive and effective type of brow lift is performed endoscopically with minimal incisions. In endoscopic or limited incision brow lift surgery, a series of small incisions approximately ½ to 1 inch long are made just behind the hairline. Using the endoscope as a guide, muscles that are the source of frown lines or forehead wrinkles are removed or defunctioned. The eyebrows are then elevated to a more appropriate position to reduce the sagging skin above eyelid level.

Recovery Information

As with most facial plastic surgery, a certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. In the first week following surgery, cold compresses as well as head elevation when lying down, will enhance healing, minimize swelling and relieve discomfort. It is also important to avoid bending, stooping, or straining despite how good you may feel. Most patients are up and around in a couple of days and back to work within 1 week.
